Work Package 2 – Shopping malls demands and retrofitting potential

This work package focuses on defining Retrofitting Drivers (RD), impacting the energy retrofitting concepts: technologies (components), solutions (systems), scenarios (whole building scale) which will be developed in WP3 to 5). Sustainable choices and good architecture contribute to a low energy demand, attractive trading jobs and meeting space.

Specific metrics will be defined to measure inefficiency and furthermore quantify the energy savings (passive side of the building system, addressed in WP3) and the enhancements in energy efficiency (active side of the building system, addressed in WP4).

The specific objectives of this work package are to:

  • Characterize the shopping malls stock in terms of architectural and structural features, energy systems layout and components, social and environmental impacts;
  • Identify the main inefficiencies regarding energy, comfort, operational (maintenance) and logistic point of view;
  • Define shopping mall typical functional patterns, influence of stakeholders (e.g., building managers, shop tenants, customers) on energy figures and interaction with social context;
  • Analyze building interactions with local energy grids;
  • Identify the Retrofitting Drivers to reduce the energy needs and increase the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in covering the energy loads, also considering thermal and electric storage systems.

We will define constructive and technology plant features as well as interaction with the local energy grids, typical functional patterns and socio-cultural aspects. 

Data will be processed to identify the main inefficiencies and the elements to target when deep retrofitting the building, to pursue the ambitious energy and sustainability goals. The analysis will be performed on 5 to 10 target buildings, that will be defined as representative of the whole building stock. The initial assessment allows to evaluate benchmark performances and set up potential retrofitting drivers.

WP2 gives the necessary energy and building specifications for the technology developments foreseen in WPs 3 to 5 and the key characterization of the shopping mall building stock for environmental, socio-cultural and economic analysis foreseen in WP5. The outcomes include reports that contribute to the analysis of the types of commercial buildings addressed.

Questionnaires – Shopping centre sustainability for 3 stakeholders’ groups

The development of good concepts and solutions requires knowledge about the needs and views of the shopping centre industry. Three web based questionnaires have been developed for: owners and managers, tenants and shopping centre customers, to be used in tasks T2.2 and T2.3.
The questionnaires focus on shopping centre sustainability and have been tailored to meet the needs and interest of the 3 different groups of stakeholders and cover a broad number of themes relating to shopping centre management, development, social activity and retail needs. We hope that you will invest a short amount of time, 15 to 20 minutes, needed to answer it by clicking below.
By answering to the questionnaire you will have the opportunity to direct the research project towards what you and your company regard as the primary considerations.
The information gathered will be used to define the specifications necessary to achieve effective energy investments within European shopping centres. The CommONEnergy project will throughout the 4 year period provide the industry with information and solutions associated with the energy efficient operation of shopping centres. Solutions which are intended to directly address the needs of stakeholders.
