New @openpoplar site launched to revitalise underused assets in East London with calls open for ideas until 30.March

The Institute for Sustainability has supported Poplar HARCA over the last year under WP3 to design and develop the rolling programme ‘Open Poplar’, which aims to revitalise derelict and underused assets by calling for ideas and proposals for use. After all the hard work and secret-keeping we are now excited to announce that Open Poplar has been launched with calls for proposals open until the 30th March 2015.

This means that thousands of square meters of underused space in East London could soon be home to community groups, new business start-ups, arts organisations and more with the launch of Open Poplar. showcases over 50 spaces across Poplar and Bow that have capacity beyond their current use: everything from garages to gardens, shed to shops. The space totals around 35,000m2.

Open Poplar is part of the £2.1bn regeneration of Poplar. The aim is to ensure that the local community, alongside organisations from further afield, is part of the Poplar of the future.

How it works:

Each space is detailed on the website, together with its size, location, floorplans, images and rental guide price. Interested parties fill in a one page business proposal which needs to be submitted by 30th March 2015.

All proposals will be considered by an advisory group comprising local residents, stakeholders and social landlord Poplar HARCA.

Paul Augarde, Head of Creativity and Innovation, Poplar HARCA explains: _“We’re open to ideas from anyone, anywhere – but our two key criteria are that proposals benefit Poplar and its people and that ideas – however creative – are backed by a sustainable business plan.

Space is such a precious commodity. We have places that are only used a few times a week, or some that have been standing empty for a while. We’re really excited to hear people’s ideas for maximising the opportunities we have.”
The website launch comes at a time when leasing activity in central London has hit its highest levels since 2007 with Docklands – just 4 minutes away from Poplar – seeing take up double from 2013.
