Nearly 160 countries will sign a United Nations deal on how to better cope with future hazards and human influenced disasters on 14-18 March. Arctik will participate to promote the EU project ENHANCE at the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan, as a ENHANCE project partner. More than 10,000 participants are expected.

Bringing together government officials and non-governmental experts from all over the globe, the World Conference is an international forum to discuss the growing trend of people being affected by natural hazards and disasters.

The conference aims to get an agreement on the 22-page negotiated draft, fully packed of ambitious goals building on the last the Hyogo Framework for Action agreed in Kobe in 2005. Among the targets, the draft calls for cutting the number of people affected by disasters per capita, either by 20% or 30%, public access to early-warning systems and increasing the number of countries with disaster risk-reduction strategies.

Although the framework remains non-biding, it attracts more attention due to recent disasters

Actively engaged in the ENHANCE project, Arctik will participate at the World Conference to promote the objectives and achievements of the project as well as its partners: UNISDR, the University College of London (UCL), the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) and the Potsdam University (PU).

ENHANCE will get the attention through a 15 minutes Ignite Stage presentation by Jaroslav Mysiak (FEEM), who will explain the project to an audience full of experts. His presentation will be recorded and accessible online later on.

On-site, Arctik will engage with visitors through the UNISDR stand whilst introducing them to the project using promotion materials such as a dedicated video, the ENHANCE leaflet and a booklet with the project cases studies.

Furthermore, Arctik will participate at thematic sessions and side events on for instance the role of partnerships in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and the role of the insurance sector in disaster risk management.
